Lately, I have been trying to respond to being alone through painting. Apart from the work I do to make a living, I spend most of my time at home with my family. The rest of the time, I am in the studio. The studio is always quiet, and no one else is there. Only then do I become aware of myself as someone who makes art. I ask myself why I do this work that no one has asked me to do, and whether I could go on living without it. In this vacuum of time, regret and shame surface, along with unresolved thoughts about what it means to live. Whatever I do, time passes, but something remains with me, and a heavy sense of impermanence and futility comes flooding in. At such times, I turn to things in which I see myself. I want to look at them attentively, to let my gaze linger, so that I can step outside the studio and return to life.
Around the time I was in my second year of middle school, our dog died. It had been gulping down a chew when its intestines suddenly twisted. Late that evening, my father came home from work and said we should go to the animal hospital to see our dead dog. In a cardboard box was something stiff, its eyes still open, neither a doll nor a living creature. No tears came. It was so strange that no feeling or thought could arise. This was my first encounter with death. When I am alone in the studio, I feel what I felt then: the state in which something once warm and happy has disappeared and become something I can do nothing about. A potted plant left in front of an elevator for reasons I do not know, wildflowers in a neglected apartment flowerbed, a water pitcher already set out at a restaurant. Because the things I paint seem to have lost both their reason for being and their purpose, I find it difficult to name what is before me. Like the death I witnessed as a child, they are things that have been left somewhere within me. With brush and paint, I keep working over them, letting them disperse, sinking inward. I want to paint glinting light, deep darkness, and moving wind so that each becomes visible only to the extent that the brush touches the surface. For as long as a brushstroke lasts, I try to take apart what I am looking at, to understand it, and to come into contact with it.
What am I doing? There was a time when I did not go to the studio, when I neither made work nor even looked at it. I had no room within myself for anything, and kept hurting people, turning away from what I had done, and blaming myself. I even wondered why I sought any connection with the world. This work seems to be slowly teaching me how to live a life of looking. Rather than looking back, I look into myself, where everything has stopped. Could it be that my childhood encounter with death allowed me to look at myself and make my way through each day?

〈Being〉

  Sang-Up Gallery Eulji-ro, Seoul
  23. May 2023 - 4. Jun 2023

Some time does not pass. And we are walking outside these times. Passing time means continuing to move away from the time from when you were born. In such a place where each person's steps stop, their times briefly overlap. We hang around there often.
Nevertheless, flowing is a property of the world. Kang Minjae's painting is of a small leaf in this world, hanging on a tree branch and spinning on a split stream of water. A small, messy present that does not flow among flowing things. A painting, no matter how thin, is in the present. Within the time frame of this painting, whether it is grass or a person, it remains the same size. Filling the entire screen with brushstrokes of the same size may be a momentary affection for a place that will not stay forever.
So these pictures seem similar to the task of selecting crude, unremarkable leaves, coating them, and placing them between books. The reason we put glitter on something that should rot is probably in the hope that it will last a little longer. Nevertheless, the boundaries of the screen make us think that the artist does not wish for something eternal. The walls remain even when the paintings are no longer hanging. And the wall visible between the gaps in the picture is a reminder of this fact. In the end, a picture that was drawn for a moment becomes a moment again. We live in these times. This time passes.
